THINGS I’M LOVING IN OCTOBER

I’ve had a whirlwind month — starting with the actual wind blowing through my hair and causing all kinds of static frizz issues, I’ve had a few health problems, and I’ve been busy trying to get my life, house and general admin all organised before November kicks in and I jet off to Mexico. But through all that, I’ve been digging into this month’s purchases to bring you lovely lot my list of the top things I’m loving this October, from beauty buys and accessories to scents, books and skincare. These are my favourite must-haves of the month!

SCENTS

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir Candle

If you haven’t tried this scent, firstly where have you been the past few years (this was THE scent circa 2014) and secondly I’d strongly recommend you run to your nearest store for a whiff. It’s simply stunning. In fairness, all Jo Malone candles are exquisite and their matching fragrances, body creams, room sprays, etc, are all worthy of handing everything you own over for. I bought the Pomegranate Noir candle back at the start of October and my house has been filled with the scent ever since — my poor boyfriend is reaching his limit of how girly our house can smell now, bless him!

It’s a sweet, rich and sexy fragrance which is great for this time of year when you’re less inclined to go for spring smells and are after deeper, heavier scent. It’s a winner for me.

The Pomegranate Noir candle in the ‘Home’ size costs £42 and is available here

BEAUTY

Dior Forever Foundation (shade 010) | Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer (shade Vanilla) | Rimmel London Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate Nude Collection (shade 40)

While my love for Dior’s Forever foundation has been going strong for over a decade (literally, that’s how into it I am!) I did need to buy some more this month so I thought I’d throw it into the pile of things I’m loving this October, but in truth, it’s something I’ve been obsessed with forever — no pun intended!

What IS new though, and I can’t think for the life of me why I haven’t invested in this already, is the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. WHERE HAVE I BEEN?! Sure, I’d seen other bloggers who I love all going on about how much a miracle worker this product is, but I’d always stuck to my usual brands. It was only by sheer fluke that I was out of the house without my makeup bag and in need of a touch up that I ran into the nearest Space NK and picked this up. It’s changed everything for me. That sounds a little serious, but it’s true. This concealer is so perfect I don’t think I could ever go back to another make now. It’s lightweight, has an easy to use wand applicator, and the vanilla shade matches my skin tone exactly. And when they say concealer, they mean it. This baby hides everything and even if I only manage three hours sleep I look so fresh and put together, no one would ever know! Ive already recommended this to so many people and honestly, if you buy any new concealer this week, month, year (even for Christmas), then this is the one to buy!

Finally, I picked up the new Lasting Finish Nude Lipstick from Kate Moss’ latest Rimmel collection and this is another winner. I’ll confess I only originally bought the product because it had such pretty packaging, but I’ve fallen in love with it. The shade I bought (40) is a perfect nude for me (sometimes I buy a ‘nude’ and it comes up looking more pink or brown on me which to be honest is just rubbish) and it’s earned a place in my everyday handbag so I can carry it round for top-ups as and when. It’s so pretty, and great for an everyday fresh-faced look.

The Dior Forever Foundation costs approx £33 and is available here

The Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer costs £22.50. Pick it up here

Rimmel London’s Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate Nude Collection costs just £7.19 and is available here.

HAIR & SKINCARE

Schwarzkopf Professional Fibreplex Shampoo | Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser

As I said before, the change in seasons this month has played havoc with my hair. To be fair, my hair was never in that great of a condition to begin with, but let’s not go into all that! October’s cold wind has however left my hair very static and no matter how many cuts I seem to have I just can’t get my hair any thicker or fuller. At my most recent hair appointment I complained to my hairdresser how I was fed up with how fine and lifeless my mane was and she recommended I try Schwarzkopf’s Fibreplex shampoo. This isn’t a shampoo — this is a life saver! I was pretty sceptical as to whether the shampoo would actually make much difference as I resigned myself to thin hair years ago, but I’ll be honest in just one wash I was blown away by how much thicker my hair felt. I was advised to apply it to wet hair, massage in and leave it to soak into my hair for a couple of minutes before rinsing, and not bother with conditioner. I was a little worried that by not using conditioner my hair would feel dry and brittle, but the result was the complete opposite. After drying my hair it was noticeably thicker, fuller, glossy and in a better condition. The Fibreplex is advertised as a reconstructive shampoo that works on rebuilding and strengthening the hair fibres, whereas other products choose to mask the problem by simply adding shine to make your hair appear healthy. I sense this isn’t just going to be a product I love in October only — this is a keeper!

Next up for my things I’m loving in October is the Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser. I used to use this product back when I was a teenager and I stopped using it when my pesky oily teenage skin didn’t get on with it. Over the years though, just like everything, my skin has changed and after a few breakouts I decided to give Dermalogica another try. I’m so glad I did. It’s so beautiful to apply and I feel like I’m giving myself a facial every morning, it’s just so lightweight, smells so clean and has no harsh abrasives to damage your skin. After a month of using this again I’ve noticed a considerable difference in my complexion, which is now much brighter, softer and my skin tone is more even. I’d definitely recommend if, like me, you suffer from super sensitive skin which is prone to breakouts.

The Schwarzkopf Fibreplex Shampoo costs between £6.55 and £16 depending on where you buy it from. Luckily for you lovely lot I’ve found the cheaper price available here

The Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser costs £27.20 and is available here

READS

The Million Dollar Blog by Natasha Courtenay-Smith | #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso

I often find it so difficult to make the time to sit down and curl up with a good book. I’m not sure whether it has something to do with my day job where I read and sub-edit so many features a day but it does affect my willingness to come home and then read some more. It takes the fun and relaxation out of the whole process. With that in mind, at the start of the month I thought what if I tried reading books which were more ‘help’ than ‘fiction’. I’d heard great reviews of both The Million Dollar Blog and #GIRLBOSS and decided to invest in both, with the view that reading them would hopefully have a more positive impact on my personal and professional life. I’m still in the middle of reading both, so I will probably do more of an overall review of each at a later date, but for the moment I’m finding them to be incredibly motivational in thinking more about the type of content I want to create, the type of person I want to be, who my brand voice is, what I can do to better myself and my goals, and overall attempt to kick ass at the targets I set myself. Here’s hoping….!

The Million Dollar Blog costs £9.79 and is available here

#GIRLBOSS (hardcover) costs £18.94 and is available here

FASHION & ACCESSORIES

Zara High Heel Ankle Boots with Elastic | H&M Lace Bralettes

Of all the fashion purchases I’ve bought this October, my new heeled ankle boots from Zara are without a doubt my favourite. I’m living in them at the moment! While I have been suffering badly from the summer blues, I am slightly giddy that it’s boot season again (not that I ever really stopped wearing boots all summer!). After my previous trusty ankle boots met a bitter end when I ended up wearing them during a slightly (very) drunk moment on a pebble beach back in July – to say I ruined them would be an understatement! – I decided to bite the bullet, give them a heroes send off and take the plunge with a new pair. I’ve had knee-high boots from Zara before, and the majority of my clothes wardrobe at the moment seems to be Zara so when I found these high heeled ankle boots on their website I figured what the heck!

For starters, even though they brag a 4 inch heel, they are SO comfy. I’m not just saying that because I wear heels all the time — they actually are seriously comfortable, to the point I’ve even worn them food shopping. They go everywhere with me at the moment and go with so many items, they make for a great everyday shoe that can just as easily be worn in the office as they can in a restaurant. I’m actually tempted to buy another pair in the unfortunate event I ruin these ones!

Next up, and last but certainly not least, I am loving lace bralettes this month. They’re comfy, they’re pretty, and they actually make you feel pretty damn confident, which I didn’t really expect. I picked this two pack (one white, one black) in H&M a while back but they’ve been sat in my lingerie drawer. I decided to start making an effort to wear them this month in an attempt to use my clothes more (or else they’ll meet the charity shop pile) and it turns out this was no effort at all. I’m not sure whether I just didn’t bother wearing them much when I bought them, but I love them now — who’d have thought! As some of you will know if you read my post last year, I had breast augmentation surgery in February 2015 and so I don’t actually need a lot of (or any) padding and don’t really need underwired bras half the time, so these cute lace bralettes are the perfect, comfy alternative but still look great.

The Zara High Heel Ankle Boots cost £39.99 and are available here

As I mentioned, the H&M Lace Bralettes in the photos were purchased a while back, but you can find cute alternatives here

And there you have it, my top things I’m loving this October! What have you guys been loving this month? X
